Say it with me: ‘I ain’t afraid of no groats!”
Brown 3 Tbsp. butter in a skillet on Med-Hi.
Pour in 1 c. raw buckwheat groats. Stir & saute 3min.
Move groats to microwave-safe casserole dish. Cover w/ 2 c . water.* Cover and nuke** on high 20min.
At about the 15-minute mark, empty 1 can kippers (or similar oily smoked fish) into Med-Hi skillet. Add 3 Tbsp. capers. Scramble together 3-5min.
When groats are done, drain off any excess water. Stir in kippers and capers from skillet and 1/3 c. hoisin sauce. Top with 1/4 c. crispy dried french-fried / golden-fried onions*** or chopped fresh or dried chives, or the chopped green part of a fresh green onion.
Tastes way better than I’ll ever make it look! And very restorative on a chilly day.
